Cambodia Bakong & Weixin Pay Link to Boost China-Cambodia FinTech

Making Payments Easier Between Cambodia and China

The National Bank of Cambodia (NBC) and TenPay Global (which runs Weixin Pay/WeChat Pay in China) have teamed up to make digital payments between the two countries simpler and faster.

They signed an agreement, called a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), to set up a way for their systems to work together. This means Cambodia’s Bakong system (KHQR) will become compatible with China’s widely-used Weixin Pay mobile payment network.

The agreement was officially signed in Singapore on November 12th during the Singapore FinTech Festival 2025. Signing the document were Dr. Chea Serey, the Governor of the National Bank of Cambodia, and Mr. Daniel Hong, Vice President of Tencent Financial Technology (the company that owns TenPay Global).

🎯 What’s the Goal?

The main purpose of this partnership is to speed up and expand digital payments between Cambodia and China, making them work better for everyone.

Through this work, both sides will focus on:

  • Improving the possibilities within the financial sector.
  • Making it easier to send and receive money across borders (both into and out of each country).

🗣️ What the Leaders Say

Dr. Chea Serey, Governor of the NBC, said:

“This is a huge step forward in improving payment connections between our countries and pushing financial innovation. It will help more people get access to financial services, make payments quicker, encourage the use of local currencies, and support the shift to digital systems. Ultimately, it will boost trade and business between Cambodia and China. By using modern digital payment technology, we can give customers, merchants, and travelers transactions that are more convenient, safe, and efficient.”

Mr. Daniel Hong, from Tencent, added:

He believes the key to making mobile wallets work everywhere is a mix of new technology and strong partnerships. He stressed that by working together, they are making it possible for users to confidently and securely use their home payment apps anywhere in the world. He concluded that this effort is building a reliable and connected payment system that truly benefits customers and creates new opportunities for international business.
